Here you will find
all the most interesting species (in may),
naturalized and acclimatized to the Picardy
climate. As well as the traditional use made of
roses: flowers and perfumes, you will see
climbing varieties, ground cover roses, rambling
roses, semi-evergreen ones with decorative
fruit, with perfumed leaves, and so on.
What is the difference between an old and a
specie rose? |
|
 |
o A specie rose is a
rose which is found growing naturally (in one
part of the world or another). For example, the
hedge rose (Rosa canina). It is not necessarily
a simple dog rose. In theory, it can reproduce
itself by producing seeds.
o An old rose is the product of hybridisation or
mutation (spontaneous or not). Therefore, it can
only be reproduced by grafting or by cuttings,
but not by seed. Old roses are considered to be
all those which have these characteristics, from
the Middle Ages to 1939.
A modern rose is one which appeared after the
war years and the long years necessary to obtain
and fix a hybrid. It must be pointed out that
"modern" or "old" has
nothing to do with the kind of flowers, more or
less double, the habit, the fragrance,
reflowering qualities, or anything else.
