This rather unorthodox rose garden
might be surprising at first glance. We were
inspired by the concept of abbey gardens:
o strict layout, in a Cistercian square
o a mix of roses and "simples", such
as the monks grew, ie plants used as medicines
and condiments, etc.
o Thus, in some beds vegetables have been
included. |
|
 |
| Of
course, these simples and these
vegetables are often the
decorative forms of the original
plants. These plants make a
complementary decorative
attraction at the time when the
roses are in bloom. This rose
garden contains old roses,
sometimes with double flowers
similar in shape to the peony,
like the variety Jacques Cartier
which is undoubtedly one of the
most fragrant, with many pale
pink blooms. It is also a
climbing variety. On the other
hand, there are also old roses
with single blooms like the
Eglantine with much bigger
petals that are either white
(Nevada) or pink (Marguerite
Hilling). |

|
There are also modern
roses in the garden, like the
variety "Jardins de Valloires"
produced by the rose grower André
Eve and presented in 1992 by
Catherine Deneuve. The rose 'Rose
des cisterciens' has been created in
1998 by the big rose grower Delbard
for the celebration of the 900 years
old of the Cîteaux Order, and
presented for the first time in our
garden.
Please note : You can buy most of
the roses you have seen in our shop.
Finally, a few flower beds include
some English roses. |
