Even in the depths of winter the
vegetation in this part of the garden has its
charm.
You will discover several varieties of birch
which have been chosen for their decorative bark.
These include the paper birch (Betula
papyriphera) whose waterproof bark was used by
the American Indians when they made their canoes.
The Betula albosinensis Septentrionalis, whose
bark peels in a very decorative fashion
(peeling: pieces of bark fall away from the
trunk).
Notice the "snakeskin" maples whose
bark is covered in white veins Prunus serula,
Prunus maackii, Prunus canescens, with lacquered
bark, mahogany, orange, black. The Acer griseum
whose trunk appears to be burnt, etc.
Have a good look at these barks. These are some
tiny marvels for those who know how to look
carefully.
